Welcome back to 2012! I hope everyone had a relaxed, fun filled holiday break. I know I did!
As this week is a short week, I am modifying homework. We will focus on math and high frequency spelling only. First graders will return to spelling and reading patterns next week. Phonics readers will be coming home.
In Social Studies we will focus on Habit 3, Put First Things First. We will also be talking and writing about New Year’s Resolutions.
We completed our science unit, Air and Weather just before winter break, but will return to that theme for a wrap up of what we learned. Our next unit will be Liquids and Solids.
This week in math, K’s will focus on addition, patterning using the pattern block template, and introducing the calendar. |
This week we are beginning our Solids and Liquids unit in science. Students will be investigating solids and their properties. This is an exciting and hands-on unit that the students will love!
In Math, we are continuing to explore place value. Students are also working hard to master their math facts. In the next few weeks, students will be introduced to fact families and turn-around facts to help solidify their math fact knowledge.
First graders will be starting more formal spelling assessments every Friday. Students are encouraged to practice their spelling words throughout the week and visit Spelling City to play spelling games. Remember that spelling tests are only one tool to help your child to better his or her spelling skills. Be positive! Learning to spell is hard work and we want spelling to be fun! Focus on what your child does well! |

Habit #3: Put First Things First
This is a great habit to work on at home! Habit #3: Put First Things First asks us to decide what is most important and to take care of that first. Some key elements the students will be learning about this habit is to put work first before playing. Remember to check this week's Thursday packet for more information about Habit #3 and activities to complete at home. |
DONATIONS:
